Regional Governance

Straits of Malacca and Singapore

The legal regime on straits used for international navigation as established in Part III of UNCLOS was modelled after the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS). The SOMS is the first of its kind to implement Article 43 by establishing a Cooperative Mechanism on Safety of Navigation and Environment Protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, to provide a framework for which littoral states and user states may promote cooperation.

As part of the CIL-MPA Oceans Governance Research Programme, CIL will examine the contemporary challenges to the transit passage regime and its future development, and the implications of such challenges and developments for the SOMS.
