Prof Surya Subedi, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Cambodia, visited CIL on 8 April 2013. The United Nations Human Rights Council voted unanimously for Prof Subedi to be the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Cambodia at its 10th Session in 2009. Prof Subedi is a Professor of International Law at the University of Leeds and is one of the Editors-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of International Law (AsianJIL). During his visit, Prof Subedi presented a public seminar on “Protecting Human Rights Through the Mechanism of the UN Special Rapporteur” during which he outlined the responsibilities of UN Special Rapporteurs for Human Rights (especially “objectivity, impartiality and independence”) as well as the challenges they faced.
