CIL Research Fellow Dita Liliansa Spoke at the 5th Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance in China
CIL Research Fellow Dita Liliansa participated as a panellist at the 5th Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance, held on 26–27 November 2024 in Sanya, China. Speaking during ‘Session 1 on Global Ocean Governance: Rules, Responsibilities, and Powers,’ Liliansa addressed the issue of equity in global ocean governance. Her presentation examined whether current frameworks, including UNCLOS, the UN Fish Stocks Agreement, and the BBNJ Agreement, promote fairness or reinforce existing inequalities. She highlighted critical questions about decision-making, benefit-sharing, and the inclusion of marginalised communities, developing nations, and future generations. She also discussed the transformative potential of the BBNJ Agreement, particularly its benefit-sharing mechanisms and support for developing states, emphasising the need for greater collaboration and action to ensure equitable outcomes in ocean governance.
