Head of Energy Law & Policy Denise Cheong and Research Fellow Nivedita S hosted a visit to CIL by Mr Frank Hardeman, the former Director-General of Belgium’s nuclear regulator, the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC-AFCN) on 3 October 2024.

He has held various positions in the Belgian Centre for Nuclear Energy Studies, (SCK•CEN) where his last position was Deputy Director-General. He has also held academic positions with the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and Hasselt University in Belgium.

During this meeting, CIL shared its research on conceptualising “ASEAN Nuclear Governance” and provided an overview of the regional landscape and its relationship to the international regime. This was followed by a discussion on potential areas that ASEAN can learn from the European Union in terms of fostering regional cooperation in nuclear governance.
