INTRODUCTORY POST

by Celine Lange

The 125th anniversary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in 2024 provides the opportunity to reflect on the institution's historical trajectory, notable achievements, distinctive qualities, and to consider its future direction. A number of commemorative events were organised around the world, including in Singapore on 25 July 2024 by the PCA Singapore Office and the Singapore Ministry of Law, with the support of the Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The present symposium consolidates the discussions from that day among the panellists, focusing on three key topics: ‘The PCA through the Ages’ (Panel 1); ‘Innovations in Dispute Resolution: the PCA and Singapore on the Cutting Edge’ (Panel 2) and ‘A PCA for the Next Century’ (Panel 3). Building on these discussions, a conclusory post follows, exploring how the PCA's distinctive characteristics place it in a unique position to influence the future of international dispute resolution.
