CIL Researcher Dr Jon Truby Appointed to OECD.AI Expert Group on Compute and Climate as participating expert

The Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Jon Truby, Visiting Research Associate Professor at CIL, as a participating expert to the OECD.AI Expert Group on Compute and Climate. Operating in an ad hoc capacity, this group is convened under the OECD.AI Policy Observatory and focuses on one of the most pressing issues in the field of artificial intelligence: the environmental implications of AI’s computing demands.

OECD.AI, a flagship initiative of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, provides data, analysis and guidance to support trustworthy AI globally. The Expert Group on Compute and Climate gathers leading experts from academia, industry and government to assess the climate impact of AI computing infrastructure and develop international benchmarks for computing capacity and sustainability. Its work supports informed policymaking to ensure that AI systems are developed and deployed with environmental responsibility.

Dr Truby’s appointment recognises his internationally respected legal and policy research on the intersection of artificial intelligence, sustainability and digital technology. His pioneering work on digital decarbonisation has explored how laws and policies can be designed to reduce the carbon footprint of emerging technologies in the interests of nature-positive AI.

Through his participation, Dr Truby contributes to an international initiative that complements CIL’s broader research mission. CIL is committed to supporting global legal dialogue in rapidly evolving areas of international law, including digital governance, emerging technologies and climate change. His involvement in the Expert Group affirms CIL’s growing role in shaping discussions around the responsible development and governance of AI.

The work of the Expert Group is also supported by the GPAI (Global Partnership on AI) Secretariat, hosted at the OECD. This collaboration highlights the integrated approach being taken to address the dual imperatives of technological progress and environmental stewardship.

Dr Truby’s appointment strengthens CIL’s contribution to the development of international law and policy research at the convergence of artificial intelligence, climate sustainability and digital governance.
