On 27 June 2025, CIL Research Fellow Dita Liliansa spoke at the Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies Colloquium Series, held at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. Her presentation, titled “Legal Challenges in Tackling Modern Slavery in Fisheries,” examined the disconnect between the recognition of fishers’ rights under international law and the persistent challenges in enforcing those rights at sea. She highlighted jurisdictional gaps and weak accountability across fisheries supply chains, and outlined legal approaches to better protect vulnerable fishers and improve access to effective remedies.
