On the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Dr Jon Truby presented at the United Nations University Macau AI Conference 2025 which was held on the theme of ‘AI for Humanity: Building an Equitable Digital Future’ and hosted in Macau SAR, China.

Prof. Truby presented in the ‘AI + Climate’ panel session on the subject of ‘International Governance of AI Compute for Climate Sustainability: the promise of nature-positive AI through International Law.’   

During the conference on 24-26 October 2025, Dr Truby highlighted the significant environmental impacts of AI technologies, particularly energy demand and carbon footprint associated with AI data centres and training processes. Dr. Truby urged law schools to expand their curriculum beyond the practical applications of AI, emphasizing the necessity to critically evaluate AI's environmental costs and promote sustainable AI governance models.

The presentation featured practical strategies such as advocating for energy-efficient AI design, renewable-powered data centres, transparent carbon accounting, and sustainable procurement policies within academic institutions. He also emphasized on how educational institutions can lead by example in prioritizing AI tools with strong net-zero credentials.

The session inspired participants to rethink legal education as a platform for driving systemic change, preparing future legal professionals to balance technological innovation with environmental stewardship.
