Event Report

On 20 May 2026, the NUS Centre for International Law hosted the inaugural event of the UNESCO Chair ASEAN Lecture Series at the Faculty of International Law, Vietnam National University Hanoi University of Law. Over 100 guests attended the lecture, which was delivered by Dr. Jon Truby, UNESCO Chair on AI Law & Sustainability at CIL NUS, and supported by the ILA AI & Technology Law Committee.

The lecture, titled 'AI Governance & Sustainable Development in ASEAN Countries,' marked the first event in the UNESCO Chair ASEAN Lecture Series under the umbrella of the Global AI for Peace & Sustainability Initiative. It examined how AI governance, emerging technologies and international law are shaping sustainable development across the ASEAN region. The session connected these themes to the Chair's research publications on AI and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, digital decarbonisation, high-risk AI regulation, AI climate impacts and SDG 16.

The programme also introduced the Chair's planned research and growth initiatives, including upcoming ASEAN Secretariat university visits, recent webinars and the Junior ASEAN Scholars Scheme, alongside the Chair's continuing work with UNESCO.

The event brought together distinguished faculty and students from across Vietnam's leading institutions. Noteworthy guests included Assoc. Prof. Son Nguyen Thi Xuan, Dean of the International Law Faculty at Vietnam National University Hanoi; Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Bich Thao, Dean; Assoc. Prof. Phan Quoc Nguyen; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Anh Dao of the International Law Faculty at Hanoi Law University; and Dr. Trinh Hai Yen, Vice Dean of the International Law Faculty at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. Faculty members in attendance included Dr. Do Giang Nam, Dr. Do Viet Cuong, Dr. Le Thi Anh Xuan, Dr. Dao Trong Khoi and Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Cham.

Vietnam Launch Event | 20 May 2026

The UNESCO Chair on AI Law & Sustainability at the Centre for International Law (CIL), National University of Singapore, is pleased to announce the first event of its ASEAN Network Series — a flagship initiative running from May 2026 to April 2027, supported by the ILA AI & Technology Law Committee.

Taking place on Wednesday, 20 May 2026 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Room 701, E1 Building, 144 Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay Ward, Hanoi, this public lecture marks the first in a series of engagements across ASEAN member states, bringing rigorous AI law and governance scholarship directly to academic communities throughout the region.

The event will be led by Dr.Jon Truby, UNESCO Chair on AI Law & Sustainability at CIL NUS, joined by researchers and a moderator for a 90-minute core session on AI law, governance and sustainable development frameworks. The programme also includes an information session on the Junior ASEAN Researcher Scheme, a Research Publications Roundtable with host faculty and a CIL-sponsored networking lunch.

The ASEAN Network Series is a flagship initiative of CIL and is aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), with a strong commitment to Global South representation, gender equity and pathways for early-career scholars.
