Youna Lyons and Yulu Liu from CIL Ocean Law and Policy Programme were invited to participate to the 3rd Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)’s Experts Working Group (EWG) on Marine Plastic Debris Meeting, in Jakarta Indonesia, 8-9 November 2022


They made a presentation titled Development of a Dynamic and Searchable Catalogue of Experts and Expertise in Research on Marine Plastic Pollution in ASEAN +3, which was jointly prepared by them and Cheng Ling Lim. This meeting was initiated by the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris (RKC-MPD), and hosted by ERIA and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).

The agenda of this EWG Meeting included the identification of data gaps and availability across the plastic value chain in the ASEAN member states and follow-up actions, as well as the exchange of views on the increase plastic pollution, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, this EWG aims to bring together researchers and experts from a diverse set of disciplines to assess the status quo of marine plastic pollution in Southeast Asia and collect available knowledge and data, to provide policy recommendations. Youna, Cheng Ling and Yulu also made a presentation at the 2nd Experts Working Group Meeting in March 2022 on capacity assessment in monitoring of marine plastics and microplastics, and preventative policy effectiveness analysis in ASEAN+3.
