CIL Research Associate Bikashita Choudhury participated in the Shipping, Digitalisation & Law virtual roundtable on “The Ungoverned Domain and Vulnerabilities of a Flag State’s Shipping Registries: The Case for an Electronic Genuine Link?” where she examined how digitalisation is transforming flag-State authority through online ship registries, electronic certificates, remote registration, and digital verification systems. She explored the vulnerabilities arising from the increasing reliance on digital interfaces in ship registration and argued that the traditional concept of the genuine link can inspire a lex ferenda development addressing these emerging challenges. Her presentation proposed an “electronic genuine link” as a modern-era principle for ensuring effective State control over the digital infrastructure through which ship registry functions are exercised.
