CIL Co-Sponsors and Participates in the KHAS Law of the Sea Summer Academy 2025, Istanbul

The Centre for International Law (CIL), National University of Singapore, co-sponsored the International Law of the Sea Summer Academy, organised by Kadir Has University from 21 July to 6 August 2025 in Istanbul, Turkey.
This year’s Academy featured 22 distinguished faculty members, including judges from international courts and tribunals, eminent academics, and experienced practitioners. Among the lecturers were H.E. Tomas Heidar (President, ITLOS), H.E. Judge David Attard (ITLOS), H.E. Judge Konrad Jan Marciniak (ITLOS), H.E. Judge Maurice Kamga (ITLOS), and H.E. Judge Bogdan Aurescu (ICJ).
Ambassador Rena Lee, Singapore’s Ambassador for the Oceans, delivered the inaugural lecture, reflecting on her role as President of the UN Conference that negotiated the 2023 Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement).
The Academy brought together 36 participants from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia, including government officials, legal practitioners, and postgraduate and undergraduate students with a strong interest in the law of the sea.
CIL also sponsored the participation of CIL Research Fellow Dr. Su Wai Mon and awarded scholarships to Mr. Haikal Amran (Maritime Institute of Malaysia) and Ms. Gridanya Mega Laidha (Indonesian Ocean Justice Initiative).
