CIL supported the Asia Roundtable Dialogue on Priority Issues in the First Substantive Session of the BBNJ Preparatory Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore, and the High Seas Alliance. The Roundtable included a briefing for ministerial representatives of ASEAN States. The briefing covered sessions on the PrepComm’s mandate, Clearing-house Mechanism, Scientific and Technical Body, and Financing. These sessions resulted in active discussions and engagement from the ASEAN representatives on various aspects related to the BBNJ Agreement, aiding their preparations for the PrepComm. The event saw active participation of ASEAN representatives, who delved into critical topics such as the establishment of a Clearing-house Mechanism to facilitate information sharing among states. Discussions also focused on the creation of a Scientific and Technical Body to provide expert advice and the exploration of sustainable financing options for the BBNJ Agreement. The Roundtable set the stage for informed participation by ASEAN states in the upcoming BBNJ PrepComm sessions.
