On 21-22 September 2024 CIL Director Dr Nilufer Oral and Prof Robert Beckman participated in the IFLOS-KMI Symposium on the 30th Anniversary of UNCLOS: The ‘Constitution for the Oceans’ in Light of Emerging Challenges, International Tribunal for Law of the Sea, Hamburg, 21-22 September 2024. The 1.5 day symposium examined emerging issues of law of the sea in light of the 1982 Convention.

Dr Nilufer Oral made a presentation in Panel 6: Law of the Sea and Climate Change, which was moderated by ITLOS Judge Kathey-Ann Brown. Dr Oral’s presentation was entitled “Sea-level Rise and Maritime Zones: Current State Practice and ILC Work”.

Prof Robert Beckman made a presentation in Panel 4: Relationship of the BBNJ Agreement’s ABMT Mechanism and Relevant Ocean Governance Institutions, which was moderated by ITLOS Judge Maurice Kamga. Prof Beckman’s presentation was entitled “Relationship of the IMO and the BBNJ Agreement”.
