Research Associate Hla Yadanar Win presented at the 2025 ILA-ASIL Asia-Pacific Research Forum, held on 7-8 July 2025 in Taipei, Taiwan.

Hla Yadanar Win presented on “Universal Jurisdiction for Crimes Against Humanity: A Tool for Justice or A Legal Overreach?”. The presentation provided an overview of universal jurisdiction and crimes against humanity, highlighted gaps in state practices across the Asia-Pacific region and addressed how universal jurisdiction can be a tool for justice. It also examined concerns surrounding the exercise of universal jurisdiction, assessed whether it violates other principles of international law and leads to legal overreach. The presentation further discussed how universal jurisdiction for crimes against humanity functions as a double-edged sword and suggested key safeguards to prevent misuse.

The conference was hosted by the Research Center for International Legal Studies of National Chengchi University (NCCU), in partnership with Chinese (Taiwan) Society of International Law, ILA (Taiwan), and the International Law & Technology Interest Group of the American Society of International Law (ASIL).
