International Law of the Sea 2024 Training Course

From 2–6 December 2024, the Centre for International Law (CIL) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) delivered a course on the International Law of the Sea, supported by the Singapore Cooperation Programme (Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The course brought together 25 participants from 22 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Pacific for a packed but rewarding week.

The programme gave participants an understanding of how the international law of the sea evolves and applies in practice, as well as the key challenges in ocean governance today. Discussions focused on what actions are needed at national, regional, and global levels to tackle these challenges.

Sessions were highly interactive, combining discussions and problem-based learning on key UNCLOS topics. Participants also took part in two practical workshops, working in teams to analyse hypothetical scenarios and present their arguments. The programme wrapped up with a learning journey to Marina Barrage, where participants got a firsthand look at Singapore’s approach to water and coastal management.
