On 27 March 2025, Dr. Jon Mark Truby attended the Singapore Maritime Institute Research Conference, which brought together international experts in maritime research to discuss cutting-edge developments in energy transition, artificial intelligence (AI), port and shipping simulations, and emissions reduction strategies for the maritime industry. The conference opened with an address from Professor Low Teck Seng and featured high-level presentations from researchers representing universities and research institutes across Asia and Europe. The sessions addressed the path toward maritime decarbonisation and the role of AI in advancing operational efficiencies and sustainability in shipping. Key presentations explored AI-driven predictive systems, digital twins, data-centric engineering, and the application of big data in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Interesting insights were offered on cyber vulnerabilities in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), and international cooperation in maritime innovation. The conference reinforced the global nature of maritime challenges and the importance of collaborative, data-driven approaches in addressing environmental and security concerns. This aligns with CIL’s ongoing interest in the intersections between AI, cybersecurity, maritime sustainability, and international law.
