CIL participated in the 6th Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) on 25–26 August 2017 in Seoul, Korea. The conference was organised by the AsianSIL, the Korea Chapter of the AsianSIL, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The theme of the conference was ‘Asia and International Law in Times of Uncertainty’. CIL Director Professor Lucy Reed chaired the session on ‘New Proposals for Investment Dispute Resolution Mechanism’. Head of CIL’s Ocean Law and Policy Programme Associate Professor Robert Beckman chaired the session on ‘New Voices in International Law’, which featured presentations from two CIL Research Associates (see below). He also gave a presentation on the implications of the South China Sea arbitral award. Head of CIL’s International Law Programme Professor Antony Anghie spoke at the special session on ‘International Law in a Transcivilizational World’. Co-Director of the ASEAN Law and Policy Programme Assistant Professor Tan Hsien-Li presented on ‘Reconceptualising Regionalism in SEA: ASEAN’s Turn to Rules and Institutions’ at the session on international law and international relations. CIL Senior Research Fellow Dr Hao Duy Phan spoke on the bindingness, finality and compliance in the South China Sea arbitration. CIL Research Fellow Dr Sun Zhen spoke on the ‘Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia’. CIL Research Associates Ms Elsa Sardinha, Ms Gloria Loo, Ms Millicent McCreath and Ms Christine Sim participated in the Junior Scholars’ Workshop, held at Yonsei University on 24 August. Ms Sardinha presented on ‘Shifting Paradigms in Investor-State Arbitration: Innovations and Challenges for Multilateralizing the Investment Tribunal System in CETA & the EU-Vietnam FTA’, based on one of her forthcoming articles in the ICSID Review (volume 32, issue 3). Ms Loo presented on ‘ASEAN’s Energy Cooperation: A Thematic Analysis and a Case Study of Indonesia’. Ms McCreath presented on ‘Coastal State Measures for Environmental Protection Affecting Transit Passage and Archipelagic Sea Lanes Passage’, and Ms Sim presented on ‘Article 298 and Maritime Boundary Disputes’. Ms Sardinha and Ms McCreath were selected to present again at the ‘New Voices in International Law’ panel on 26 August, after being awarded the top presentations in international trade law and law of the sea respectively at the Junior Scholars’ Workshop.
