CIL Participates in 37th Annual COLP Conference on “Global Challenges and Freedom of Navigation”” in Seoul

CIL was one of the co-sponsors of the 37th Annual Conference of the Center for Oceans Law and Policy (COLP) on “Global Challenges and Freedom of Navigation” from 1-3 May 2013 in Seoul, Korea, which was organized by the COLP at the University of Virginia and the Korea Maritime Institute. Professor Tommy Koh, Chairman of CIL’s Governing Board, gave the Welcome Address (delivered by CIL Director Robert Beckman) (view in PDF). CIL sent a delegation consisting of CIL Director Prof Beckman and CIL Researchers Tara Davenport, Hao Duy Phan, Leo Bernard and Monique Page to attend the Conference. There were seven Panels on Counter-Piracy Operations, Transnational Threats, Developments in the Arctic Ocean, Deep Seabed Mining Update, Energy Security and Sealanes, Balancing Marine Environment and Freedom of Navigation and Marine Data Collection. Prof Beckman gave a presentation on “Responsibility of Flag States for Pollution on the High Seas” (view in PDF); Tara Davenport spoke on “Piracy and Armed Robbery in Southeast Asia: An Evolution in Cooperation?” (view in PDF); Hao Duy Phan spoke on “Institutional Building for Maritime Security in Southeast Asia: The Role of ASEAN” (view in PDF) and Leo Bernard on “Cooperation in the Straits of Malacca & Singapore” (view in PDF). CIL’s participation at the 37th Annual COLP Conference marks the third time CIL has collaborated with COLP in its Annual Conferences on the Law of the Sea – CIL also sponsored a Panel in the 35th Annual COLP Conference on “Maritime Border Diplomacy” held in Bali, Indonesia (more information available here) in 2011 and in the 36th Annual COLP Conference on “The Continental Shelf Regime under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea: Reflections after Thirty Years” held in Halifax, Canada (more information available here).
