Singapore International Arbitration Academy 2014 (SIAA 2014)
Jointly organised by the National University of Singapore’s Centre for International Law and the Faculty of Law, the 2014 Singapore International Arbitration Academy brings together some of the world’s leading experts in international arbitration for an 11-day programme designed specifically for busy government officials and private practitioners.
CIL is pleased to announce the successful run of the 2014 Singapore International Arbitration Academy from 14 to 26 November 2014. Its 11-day intensive programme blended together theory and skills training in the field of investor-State arbitration and attracted more than 40 participants from government service and private practice. The 2014 Academy was yet another unparalleled opportunity for government and private practitioners in the Asia Pacific region and from around the world to meet, interact with luminaries of international arbitration, and develop new professional relationships. Enrolment in the Academy included attendance at a special seminar co-organised with the Washington-based International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes on 19 November 2014. Planning for the next session of the Academy, scheduled for November/December 2015, is already under way. Please join the CIL mailing list to remain updated on the 2015 Academy and upcoming CIL events.
Some of the highlights of the 2014 Singapore International Arbitration Academy programme include:
- Simulated conduct of an arbitration based on a hypothetical dispute
- Theory and practice-based sessions
- One-day special event on ICSID arbitration led by ICSID Secretary-General Meg Kinnear
- In-depth dissections of real cases by practitioners who appeared in them
- Exploration of cutting-edge issues in international arbitration
- Advocacy training sessions by expert-trainers
- One-on-one interactions with Faculty in training sessions and social events
A message from the patron of the Academy, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon

Chief Justice of Singapore
“In November 2014, the Singapore International Arbitration Academy will once again hold its intensive programme on international arbitration for private practitioners and government officials.
The Academy was conceived as a means of providing world-class training and education in South East Asia for aspiring arbitration practitioners. Each year the Academy draws on a global faculty of leading arbitrators and counsel to come to Singapore in order to share their knowledge and experience with younger practitioners. This year’s edition is no exception.
As a patron of the Academy and indeed a past participant in some of its programmes, I have been delighted to witness its rich and challenging curriculum in action under the direction of Christopher Thomas QC and his team. I do hope that you will be able to join the Academy for what I am convinced will be a stimulating and engaging programme.”

“Thank you again for putting together an excellent program that was helpful to practitioners and government officials alike. Needless to say, I learned a lot from the Singapore International Arbitration Academy, and not only that, got to meet and form friendships with brilliant people. The program was especially helpful in guiding me which issues to focus on as well as where to look in terms of reference materials.”
