Book Launch: Can ASEAN Take Human Rights Seriously?

On 12 June 2019, the NUS Centre for International Law launched its latest publication in the ASEAN Integration Through Law series published by Cambridge University Press—Can ASEAN Take Human Rights Seriously? In his opening remarks, Professor Kevin Tan spoke on the little-known historical side of human rights and ASEAN. The panel discussion among the two authors—Professor Alison Duxbury of Melbourne Law School and Assistant Professor Tan Hsien-Li of CIL and the NUS Law Faculty—and  Yuyun Wahyuningrum, Indonesia’s representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, examined the ASEAN human rights system in the context of existing national and international human rights institutions, the historical experiences of ASEAN states and ASEAN as an organisation regarding human rights, and the legal, institutional and practical avenues to strengthening the ASEAN human rights system.
