CIL E-Training on Law of the Sea and Climate Change

A big thank our trainers and participants for successful conclusion of the CIL E-Training on Law of the Sea and Climate Change

From 05 to 09 February 2024, the Centre for International Law held the CIL E-Training on Law of the Sea and Climate Change. The course was conducted under the Japan-Singapore Partnership Programme for the 21st Century (JSPP21). The objective of the course is to provide participants with a background on the challenges of climate change on the oceans and how  these challenges can be mitigated or addressed using the law of the sea as reflected in UNCLOS.

Sixteen national delegates who are government officials working in agencies in charge of foreign affairs, environment and ocean from nine countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands took part in the course.

The Course invited leading international experts and academics to discuss various topics relating to various topics relating to the law of the sea and climate change, namely sea level rise, ocean acidification and warming, climate change litigations, maritime boundaries and the works of various UN organs (the UNFCCC, the ILC) in addressing climate change. A workshop on national measures for climate change’s mitigation and adaptation was also held where national delegates shared the impacts of climate change to their countries’ maritime domain and which national adaptation and mitigation measures have been taken by their government agencies.
