On 3 May 2023, CIL and the International Law Association (Singapore Branch) co-organized the Distinguished Speaker’s Lecture – “The End of 100 Years of the Pax Americana (1917-2017): Reasons and Geopolitical Implications” – given by Professor Joseph Weiler (NYU Law School; Co-Head of the ASEAN Law and Policy Programme, CIL). Our distinguished moderator Mr George Yeo (Visiting Scholar, NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy) responded with deeply intellectual and thought-provoking remarks. Acknowledging that although America remains a superpower – militarily and economically - Professor Weiler explained why its containing and shaping influence is declining. The two speakers challenged perceived norms and questioned assumptions for the world order, flowing from the shift in the global demographics, comparative economic development and consumption patterns, American domestic politics, and international moral standing. CIL and ILA Singapore are grateful to Allen & Gledhill for generously hosting the lecture and reception at their Auditorium.

The heyday of the Pax Americana was the period of about 100 years stretching from the intervention of the US in WWI and ending at some point in the last decade. Though contested by some, not least American stakeholders, it is in the eyes of most an epochal change. This lecture will analyze the causes of this development and speculate on some implications for our current unstable geopolitical circumstance.
