International Dispute Resolution

Singapore International Arbitration Academy

The Singapore International Arbitration Academy (SIAA) is an intensive and in-depth programme on international arbitration for government officials, private practitioners and legal academics. Each year, the Academy brings together some of the world’s leading experts in this field for a programme that blends theory, substantive and procedural law, and skills training. In addition, a highlight of the programme is the final-day arbitration moot, where participants make oral arguments before distinguished tribunals comprising luminaries of international arbitration. Through this unique and exciting experience, past participants from within the Asia Pacific region and around the world have been able to meet and interact with luminaries of international arbitration, and develop new professional relationships. The Academy was launched in 2012 and is in its tenth year in 2022.

2021 saw the first virtual iteration of the Singapore International Arbitration Academy (SIAA), with all sessions held over Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the difficulty of coordinating preparations for a moot with participants outside of Singapore, the programme was reconfigured and shortened in 2021 without a moot but with an added emphasis on providing an online learning experience catering for the needs of busy government officials. New sessions were added relating to the topics of:
(1) mediation, conciliation and dispute prevention;
(2) practitioner insights in specific sectors such as energy, mining, finance and construction;
(3) evidentiary rules and memory/witness issues;
(4) damages;
(5) challenge and enforcement of investment treaty awards; and
(6) how investor-State disputes are argued.
