2 – 3 November 2021: CIL Research Associate Maria Pia Benosa presented at the “Towards a Peaceful Sea: Maritime Security Amidst Contemporaneous Challenges” Conference

CIL Research Associate Maria Pia Benosa took part in the 2021 Malaysia Ministry of Defense and Security (MiDAS) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) (“MiDAS-KAS) Conference from 2-3 November 2021, on the theme “Towards a Peaceful Sea: Maritime Security Amidst Contemporaneous Challenges”. Ms. Benosa delivered a presentation on “Challenges to the Post-Arbitration Legal Order in the South China Sea”, as part of the panel on “Existing Maritime Laws, Policies and Challenges”, with Prof. Dr. Salawati Mat Basir (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) and Dr. Arron Honnibal (Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law).

Ms. Benosa’s presentation delved into key findings in the South China Sea Arbitration Award (Philippines v. China), legal and political developments since its promulgation, and the potential flashpoints and shared interests of claimant States and other non-regional stakeholders in the highly volatile maritime area.

The virtual platform and select recordings of the Conference can be accessed at https://www.midaskas.virtualive.tech. A report of the conference will also soon be available at https://midas.mod.gov.my.
