Senior Research Fellow Mohammad Hazrati co-presented “Decarbonising Shipping: The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and Challenges of Just Transition” in Session 3 on Just & Equitable Transition and Energy Justice. This presentation critically evaluated the extension of the EU ETS to include the shipping sector and its application to extra-EU voyages through the lens of the Just Transition framework and international law.

Research Fellow S Nivedita presented “From Safety to Liability: Charting a Course for Nuclear-Powered Ships” in Session 6 on Nuclear-powered Vessels, which Head of Energy Law & Policy Denise Cheong moderated. Nivedita’s presentation focused on the legal issues surrounding the deployment of civilian nuclear-powered ships for commercial shipping, specifically regarding safety and liability, and underscored the need to update and establish new rules and standards.
