CIL Research Associate Eduardo Cavalcanti de Mello Filho participated as discussant in a panel of the Conference “Rounding the Cape – Storms of Good Hope for the Law of the Sea”, held from 28 to 30 April in Cape Town, South Africa. It was headed by Professor Patrick Vrancken, Chair in the Law of the Sea and Development in Africa, Nelson Mandela University. In organising this event, he was joined by several other academic institutions and stakeholders from Africa, the Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
Eduardo discussed the contributions of Dr. Andrea Longo, Dr. Robert Steenkamp, and Dr. Zia Madani. Regarding the first, Eduardo commented on the role in the Law of the Sea Convention of rules and standards concerning the living and working condition of persons onboard fishing vessels. As to the second one, he addressed policy proposals on the participation of African States in fora covering one or more forms of marine geoengineering. Finally, he also analysed the role of science in the intersection between climate change and the law of the sea, particularly in the context of the advisory opinion rendered by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in May 2024.
