CIL Research Fellow Dr Su Wai Mon delivered a guest lecture titled “Maritime Criminality and Cybersecurity: Strengthening Global Regulatory Responses” as part of the Maritime Safety, Security, and Labour module taught by Associate Professor Dr Khansaa Lagdami at World Maritime University on 21 April 2026.

The session featured an interactive discussion based on a hypothetical scenario involving maritime cyber incidents affecting ships. Course participants, drawn primarily from maritime administrations including port authorities, transport ministries, navies, and coastguards, contributed valuable operational and policy perspectives grounded in practical experience and real-world maritime realities.

A key takeaway from the discussion was the importance of adopting a proactive “prevention is better than cure” approach to maritime cybersecurity governance. The session also underscored the need for international cooperation and cross-sector collaboration in strengthening resilience against evolving maritime cyber threats.
