CIL Researchers present at the 7th Alexander C. Cushing International Law Conference on 13-14 May 2025
CIL researchers participated in the 7th Alexander C. Cushing International Law Conference, held in Manila, the Philippines, from 13 to 14 May 2025. The conference was organised by the U.S. Naval War College in collaboration with the University of the Philippines College of Law and the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Command and Staff College.
Digvijay Rewatkar made a presentation on Deep Seabed Mining and Security of Subsea Assets. The presentation addressed the security concerns for seabed contractors regarding interference with their operations, and highlighted the ambiguity surrounding the responsibilities of the International Seabed Authority and Sponsoring states in the protection of subsea assets. It also covered other relevant regimes, including Piracy, the SUA Convention and the status of Warships involved in such incidents.
Dita Liliansa made a presentation on Security of Maritime Trade in times of Armed Conflict. She highlighted the impact on global shipping, and particularly shipping in the ASEAN region in the event of an armed conflict. The presentation drew lessons from International Armed Conflicts and Non-International Armed Conflicts across different regions particularly the Black and the Red sea, and their impact on global trade. The presentation also highlighted the issue of maritime neutrality of archipelagic states in times of an armed conflict.
