This seminar was held at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University on Friday, 7 June 2024.

The practical handbook aims to offer guidance on developing national or common positions on international law as it applies to cyberspace. 

It was organised by the World Maritime University and Stockton Center for International Law at the U.S. Naval War College and supported by the Transport General Authority of Saudi Arabia.

Joel Ong presented on highlights from his recent journal article published in the Carbon & Climate Law Review, entitled ‘Decarbonizing International Shipping at the IMO: Are Alternative Fuels The Way Forward?‘ in Session 1: Shipping and GHGs at the IMO, on the developments on ammonia and methanol as alternative fuels at the International Maritime Organization after the 2023 adoption of the Revised GHG Strategy.

Her presentation discussed the applicability of IMO regulations in regard to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fishing vessels and possible ways forward.

Dr Nilufer Oral was elected to be a member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law in January 2024 and participated in her first meeting in The Hague on 24 May 2024.

Dr Oral spoke on Environmental Protection at the panel “Investor Obligations Cluster I: Global Stewards”.

The briefing was structured around the Chair’s guiding questions and was followed by an interactive dialogue with delegations and experts.

Joel Ong presented on ‘An Introduction to Maritime Law Careers in Singapore’.

Her article is readily accessible via open access at: https://brill.com/view/journals/apoc/8/2/article-p287_006.xml. She also participated in the ‘Special Sessions on the Newport Manual on the Law of Naval Warfare’ on May 17, 2024.

She delivered introductory remarks for Session 4 on “Non-Traditional Maritime Security Issues: Combating Piracy, Illegal Fishing and Human Trafficking,” focusing on the forced labor and trafficking aspects of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Research Associate Daniel Nicholas Pakpahan presented a paper titled “Sea-level rise and migration: Beyond the mainstream international law vocabulary” at the Trinity College Dublin Symposium on Climate Change and Migration.

Nilufer spoke on 29 April 2024, on the topic “Capacity Building and Transfer of Marine Technology”.

Joel Ong presented his key findings and research on climate change and shipping at the IMO, entitled: ‘Developments, Barriers, Prospects of Mitigating Shipping’s Impact on Climate Change at the IMO: A Diachronic Approach’.

Nilufer spoke on the topic: “Sea-Level Rise Developments in the United Nations”.

The programme brought together high level national cybersecurity officials from 22 countries in an inter-disciplinary programme to enhance expertise in overseeing cyber and digital security policy-making, strategies and operations. 

She discussed the progress and prospects of protecting the human rights of fishers in Southeast Asia, and how law of the sea and international human rights law can better interact.
