CIL Director Robert Beckman lectured at the 14^th Annual Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy, a three-week course on contemporary issues of ocean law and policy. The Rhodes Academy is a cooperative undertaking sponsored by the Center for Oceans Law and Policy (Virginia, USA), the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law (Rhodes, Greece), the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland (Reykjavik, Iceland), the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Heidelberg, Germany), and the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (Utrecht, The Netherlands).

CIL Director Robert Beckman made a presentation on “Somali Piracy – Legal Issues concerning the Arrest and Prosecution of Somali Pirates” at the Raytheon annual meeting of regional managers, St Regis Hotel, Singapore.

CIL Director Robert Beckman made a presentation on “Military Activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone” at the International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC) at the Singapore EXPO. The Conference was organized by the Republic of Singapore Navy and the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS).

CIL Director Robert Beckman made a presentation on “The Law and Practice in Asia on the Protection of Submarine Cables” at the CIMA/COLP Submarine Cable Workshop in Beijing, China. Prof Beckman also served as Rapporteur for the Workshop. The Workshop was organized by the China Institute of Maritime Affairs (CIMA) of Beijing, China and the Centre for Oceans Law and Policy (COLP) of the University of Virginia, with support from the International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC).

Danielle Yeow participated in an invitation only workshop on Crypto and Net Zero 2022 in the World Economic Forum led workshop series on Crypto Impact and Sustainability Accelerator (CISA) Net Zero which convenes experts to discuss methods to effect a sustainable transformation of carbon markets and explore how crypto-economic mechanisms and new models for transparency can help institutions both achieve and enhance net-zero commitments. The workshop focused on nuclear and ocean governance issues and was held virtually on 19 October 2023.

The Expert-Level Workshop on Addressing the Threats Posed by Sea Level Rise was meant for the UN Delegates and Staff to learn relevant background on an issue of significant concern for a growing number of Member States, including those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as communities in Small Island Developing States and coastal states.
